Embrace your shape

No two ears are the same, so why should hearing aids be? With in-the-ear hearing aids, also know as ITE or full shell, you'll get a fit tailor-made to every curve and bend of your ear. Gone are the days of bulky, uncomfortable hearing devices. With ITE hearing aids, you can forget about what you're wearing and focus on what matters.

ITE in action

With in-the-ear hearing aids, all essential elements are stored in the large shell of the device. This gathers sound from the outside world through a microphone, converts it into sound waves that are enhanced through an amplifier, and sends it to a speaker for you to hear the sound. Amazing how much action is packed into such a tiny device, isn't it?

Pros and Cons

If you're looking for a hearing device that's small and discreet but still packs the power you want, in-the-ear hearing aids are a compromise you won't regret.

Slightly bigger than in-the-canal styles, the larger shell of ITE hearing aids makes room for a bigger battery and powerful features. With all essential elements directly inside the outer ear, you don't have to worry about a bulky, external device getting in your way. Think clear sounds and optimal fit.

Keep in mind, however, that there can be downsides to this type of style. Since the microphone and receiver are in close quarters, if the device isn't properly fitted or gets knocked out of place, it can lead to feedback, an unpleasant, high-pitched noise.

In addition, since the device fits directly into the ear, there is a higher chance of earwax build-up. This makes maintenance and cleaning essential if you choose to go with an in-the-ear design.

Why say yes to ITE

If a custom, comfortable style is something you're looking for in your hearing aids, an in-the-ear design is a great fit—literally.

Your Hearing Care Professional will take an impression of your ear, meaning your hearing aid will be made for every bend and curve of your ear. Combine that with a range of available colors, which can be matched to your skin tone, and you'll get a device that's tailor-made for you.

If you have trouble handling smaller devices but don't want to settle for a big, bulky alternative, ITE hearing aids are also the way to go.

Hearing loss levels

Just like every ear shape and form is different, so too is an individual's degree of hearing loss. Is an in-the-ear hearing aid a good option for you? Those with mild or moderate hearing loss can definitely benefit from this design. And since there are options for a slightly larger design, even those will more severe hearing loss may find an ITE design that works for them as well.

Adjusting to your ITE hearing aid

The benefit of the in-the-ear design is its custom fit to the shape of your ear. If you have a hearing aid that has been properly fitted to your ear, it should fit comfortably and provide a clear, authentic sound. With that said, any new device will take a bit of time to get used to.

ITE vs other designs

Small enough to go mostly unnoticed, yet big enough for powerful functionality, we like to think of the in-the-ear design as the ultimate happy medium. If you prefer stronger features over a discreet size, or have a severe level of hearing loss, behind-the-ear models may be a better option for you.
